5 I.T. Concepts Small Firms Shouldn't Overlook in 2009

Six months to go - almost a full generation in technology

by Keith Wheeler

1. Hardware/Software Consistency: Decide on a pre-determined life-cycle for hardware of roughly three years. Upgrade software on all PC’s simultaneously for better compatibility.

2. Power Protection: Does the server system and its supporting peripherals have adequate power protection and backup capacity?

3. Backup Scheme: Simple backup systems are a great start, but consider media rotation, offsite options, redundancy and disaster recovery.

4. Network Security: Big corporations might be bigger targets, but smaller firms not focused on security are easier targets.

5. Virus/Spyware Infiltration: Downtime due to infection inevitably costs much more than the protection. Don’t skimp here.
